James Wallace Black (1825-1896), known professionally as J.W Black was an early American photographer whose career was marked by experimentation and innovation. Born in New Hampshire, we moved to Boston to try to be a painter and turned to photography there after. A woman in a lace dress, leans against a stair case banister with her arms crossed. She looks towards the right side of the photograph, in profile view.
