Jim Ferringer (1952-2018), American Tarnished Images, 1989 Mixed media construction Promised gift 2023 This work was just offered as a gift to the Purdue University Galleries permanent collection. Ferringer attended Purdue University from 1970 until 1987 getting his undergraduate degree and masters in metalwork and sculpture. Currently Purdue Galleries has no examples of his work in the collection, so this is a welcome addition. Ferringer produced small box-like works such as this one. It has the appearance of a crypt, a stage, a doll house, and a religious altar with its wings opened. The inclusion of the hands and use of gray creates a sense of uncanny surrealism.
