1987.11.03Description
The artist depicts a forest scene, with a waterfall flowing out into a small body of water. There are rock formations next to and around the waterfall. Trees fill the background of the work. Very textures because of the use of palette knife which creates a very dynamic and feels almost rough because of the grooves and ridges on the canvas. This creates the effect of the water feeling dimensional and also like there is depth to the background of the piece. The artist uses primarily darker colors with browns, greens, and blacks to create the forest, with some brown and bright blue on the rocks. For the waterfall and the water, the artist uses light blues and whites, along with some light green and yellows to create the illusion of depth. The waterfall is given depth through the gradient from light to dark as the water moves to the right. The artist uses pops of color like the bright blue in the rocks, deep plum color, and also the light colors in the trees. The artist uses light green and the whites in the waterfall to put emphasis on the center of the piece just above the drop in the waterfall. The gradient created in the water from light to dark also mimics the way the water would be moving down stream. The pops of color in the rocks and in the forest also invite the viewer to look at the smaller details of the trees and the rocks at the bottom of the piece.Type of Painting
