Edward Fisher (1722-ca.1781), British or Irish The Studious Fair, 1767-1782 Ink on paper mezzotint 2021.05.12 This work shows a young woman dreamily gazing off into the distance while composing a letter. This work does not represent a specific woman, rather the ideal of a romantic or contemplative woman in the late 18th century. Around her left wrist is a miniature portrait, likely of her lover or husband who she is possibly writing to and daydreaming about. Under her left elbow is a low locked box, suggesting that she has letters from her lover. She wears a gown, fur stole, and pearl hair ornaments. The contrast between the darkened room and bright light of the lamp emphasizes her face and hands.
