2005.02.012Description
Painted enamel (finift) depicting the Mother of God in white maphorion, blue cloak, and pink robes. Flanking this central depiction are various male and female worshippers and white winged angels on a background of green grass with twin palm like bushes. Above the bushes sit two Cyrillic captions on a white banner. In the top center, God presides over the scene in grey-gold clouds wearing a pink robe, blue sash, and holding the gospel in one hand. Throughout this image are scattered copper colored coins. This is a nod to the original prototype of this image which had coins fuse to an icon when it was struck by lightning and the church alms box fell upon it. The enamel painting is covered in copper with metal frame and standType of Painting

For a description of this traditional subject, see 2005.02.101. For reference of the history behind "Variation with Coins" iconographic pieces, refer to cultural context of 2005.02.026. Painted enamel was produced in Rostov from the 18th century onward, mainly for small medallions of pictures of saints. These were used to decorate church books and utensils. Later this technique was applied to icons. The same area is still famous for its enameled jewelry, boxes and other objects.
