The Manicure Mary Cassatt Etching In contrast to her male contemporaries like Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir who created snapshots of rural landscapes and urban life, Mary Cassatt’s paintings and prints captured intimate moments in women’s domestic lives. Here, a mother holds her child close in her lap while trimming her nails. The outlines of the forms are very light and cause the figures to blend with their surroundings. This effect is similarly created by the light brushstrokes found in Cassatt’s and other Impressionist paintings. Carrie Kelb
