We are on Goat Island, in the middle of Niagara River. Behind us all the waters of the Great Lakes come sweeping along to take their turn at this terrific plunge over the cliffs. Just now we are looking N. N. E. down the river between the boarders of the State of New York (right) and the Canadian dominions of King Edward (left). Whatever may be the political destiny of the two lands there is certainly a great gulf fixed between lands there is certainly a great gulf fixed of the two lands there is certainly a great gulf fixed between lands there is certainly a great gulf fixed between them by nature! Beyond the steel bridge we can see the river gorge about half the distance down towards the Whirlpool. The endless wear and tear of the torrent has cut off a bit of Goat Island down at our right and made it quite separate - that is Luna Island where the people stand on the railed terrace. We can pass over there by a little foot-bridge. above the narrow ribbon of the Luna Falls that we see now glittering and glistening through the trees. The Rock of Ages is down at the foot of the Luna Falls. The huge Horseshoe Falls are at our left, between us and the Canadian shore. The Cave of the Winds is almost directly under where we stand at this moment.
This is one of the best spots from who to see the American Falls in all their grandeur. It is 167 feet that those waters plunge straight down and the depths of the lower river below the surface is even greater. It is 1060 feet from the nearer to the farther edge of the precipice over which the American Falls take their gigantic leap. "The vapor rises high into the air and is gathered there, visible always as a permanent white cloud over the cataract, but the bulk of the spray . . . is like a tumult of snow. The head of it rises ever and anon out of that caldron below but the caldron itself will be invisible. It is ever so far down - as far as your own imagination can sink it."
