"John Hitchcock was born in Lawton, Oklahoma and grew up In the Wichita Mountains of Oklahoma. He Is an Artist and Associate Professor of Art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he teaches screen-printing, relief cut, digital mixed media prints, and installation art.
His current works, a blend of printmaking, photography, video and installation, depict personal, social, and political views that are a direct result of stories shared by family members and issues regarding living on Comanche lands in Oklahoma. In his work he incorporates idealized interpretations of the American Indian with objects of the reality of life on native lands and symbols of spiritual significance.
He earned his MFA In printmaking and photography at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas and received his BFA from Cameron University, Lawton , Oklahoma. He Is the recipient of many honors and awards including the American Photography Institute, National Graduate Seminar FeIIowship at New York University, Tisch School of Arts, Jerome Foundation grant, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the Vilas Associate Grant, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Hitchcock has served on the Southern Graphics Council Board, Mid American Print Council Board, and was a coordinator for the SGC conference in Madison in 2006. Hitchcock’s teaching experience includes Assistant Professor of Studio Art at the University of Minnesota, Morris and Visiting Artist at Texas Tech University.
Exhibitions of his art works include group shows at Seacourt Collaborative Press (Bangor, Ireland), Institute of American Indian Art Museum (Santa Fe, New Mexico), New York University Tisch School of Art (New York), Visual Studies Workshop (Rochester, New York), Southern Graphics Council Conference (Miami, Florida), and American Indian Community House Gallery (New York) and solo shows at the University of Oklahoma (Norman, Oklahoma), University of Northern Iowa (Cedar Falls, Iowa), Intermedia Arts (Minneapolis, Minnesota), Living Arts of Tulsa (Tulsa, Oklahoma), and Texas Tech University.
