Philip Galle (1537-1612), Dutch after Anselm van Hulle (1601-ca. 1694), Flemish Godard de Reede, 1649 Ink on paper engraving 2021.05.02 This portrait is of the diplomat Godard van Reede published in the Pacis Antesignani sive icones Legatorum from 1648 commemorating the end of the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). Originally depicting 33 portraits, the book was expended in subsequent editions. This work likely came from the 1649 edition. The Latin text around the frame states that he signed the peace treaty of Munster, the first of three treaties that ended the conflict between the Netherlands and Spain leading to Dutch independence. It is interesting to contrast this work with the portraits of Mary of Burgundy and Maximillian II, all produced in the same period and telling different sides of Dutch independence.
