Florence Lonsford
Gouache
Though a talented artist in her own right, Purdue Graduate and Indiana native Florence Lonsford is best known (at Purdue University at least) as a generous benefactor of the arts. Lonsford was a self-taught artist who exhibited her paintings, sculptures, and prints in exhibitions at home and overseas. Sunset with Boats demonstrates Lonsford’s keen sense of color and line.
Through the Lonsford Fund the Purdue Galleries is able to acquire new art objects for the collection, with a particular emphasis on artworks to populate the campus grounds, enriching and inspiring students in their everyday lives at Purdue. Because of Lonsford’s devotion to the arts students have been able to experience the works of artists such as Patrick Dougherty, Deborah Butterfield, Helena Hernmarck, James Tyler, Prester Jackson, and Nina Hole, many of which can still be seen dotting the campus today.
