Description

The piece is titled, "Our Cancer Year (Four Walls Eight Windows, 1994)" and it was written by Joyce Brabner and Harvey Pekar. This is a non-fiction comic that tells the story of Harvey overcoming cancer and his journey with his wife Joyce. Our Cancer Year was illustrated by Frank Stack (he also goes by Foolbert Sturgeon). Purdue owns 3 of the original sheets of this comic. In this piece it is the 2nd in date from the other 2 Purdue holds. This scene depicts a moment of Harvey's life where he is imagining his life flashing in his eyes in a pessimistic way. The marks are expressionistic in a way that adds dimension and emotional turmoil to the scene. He has a hard time hearing his wife due to his depressive and suicidal thoughts. As time passes, he begins to lose himself more to his cancer in mindset and body.
