Rabbi Ingber shares that he is afraid of heights -- Highway 1 in CA is terrifying. Confrontations with death, fictional (the show Modern Family) and real-life (his friend who got a sudden cancer diagnosis) startle us with life's contingency, fragility. The kim'at (almost) of Isaac's death in the Akedah is believed to have killed his mother Sarah -- she was faced with that kim'at and midrash says her soul left her body. Ishbitzer says that the message of Parshat Re'eh is to live in the awareness of that contingency "SEE, I put before you life and death" today, every day. Don't wait for a crisis -- every day can be a day of renewal. This is an Elul challenge.Archive Details
