Scope and Content

Rabbi Ingber shares a story of his time studying at a Zen retreat and thinking he had solved his first Koan, only to learn he had misheard a mundane question. He then relates this to a Koan in the story of Sarah and Yishmael, and and how it relates to the blowing of the shofar. Yishmael is not mentioned by name, and God hears his silent cries that others cannot hear. Rabbi Ingber then relates this to being vulnerable and how that is related to shame and weakness. He demonstrates that Rosh Hashanah is the birth leading to Yom Kippur.
