rdi-2016.11.11Scope and Content
Rabbi Ingber reflects on what a long week it has been, in this post-2016 election sermon, in which he also reflects upon the death of singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. He draws upon many of Cohen's lyrics throughout the sermon, while also alluding to the story of Abraham in the bible. He discusses the question of why Abraham was chosen by God, as there was nothing "special" about him, like Noah. Rabbi Ingber uses Rabbi Heschel's arguments that Abraham was drawn to a bright light (or fire) of a palace. And he compares this to people being drawn to religion. They either go toward it because of the lights of hope they see; or they do because everything is burning down and there is chaos. Rabbi Ingber says the world is on fire, and everyone must move forward and find a way to protect the vulnerable--but also reconcile how to find joy and how to understand each other.Archive Details
