Rabbi Ingber begins by discussing the negotiations he has with his children to get them to do things by promising if they do X, then they will get Y. And that as adults, we learn to just do things without the promise of a reward. He relates this to the story of Jacob leaving home and dreaming he ascends a ladder to heaven. Rabbi Ingber says that in this story, Jacob's "deal" with God can be interpreted as he is afraid that he will not be worthy of God.Archive Details
