The More Demanding Miracle: Parshat Re'eh 2026 August 7Entry/Object ID
rdi.2026.08.07Scope and Content
Rabbi Ingber's son Or believed in the Tooth Fairy. Like all of us who long for a savior, a prophet who will come and make everything better when there is a loss. Theme of magical thinking. Friend who had to have surgery for cancer -- he longed for a new bargain with reality. Magical thinking extends also to politics -- we are desperate for a savior. Parshat Re'eh asks us to see clearly, not just what we wish were true. And if there is a false prophet, do not heed them. False prophet might actually be able to perform miracles, but still we shouldn't follow them because they demonize others and relieve us of responsibility. T'shuvah is claiming that responsibility, seeing ourselves clearly. Real miracles can happen by our own hands. Real Tooth Fairy was the parents whose love was real.Archive Details
