General Notes

Note

The Orion II is a refinement of the original Orion and introduces several enhancements. Featuring a high-brightness TFT color display, a refined roofing filter system, and advanced audio routing. The radio utilizes a sophisticated architecture with dual 32-bit floating-point DSP processors and a 32-bit control processor to provide high-speed response and superior signal processing. Basic Features Dual Receive Capability: Includes an amateur-band-only main receiver (10–160m) and a general coverage sub-receiver (up to 30 MHz) that can operate simultaneously with no performance compromise. Advanced Roofing Filter System: The main receiver supports up to seven crystal roofing filters; four are standard (20, 6, 2.4, and 1 kHz), with three additional optional narrow filters available. Customizable AGC: Users can program independent threshold, hang, and decay rates for each receiver, offering over one million possible combinations. Real-Time Spectrum Display: A continuous real-time display allows for monitoring band activity with five selectable sweep ranges. Panoramic Stereo (PS): A unique feature that allows operators to hear signals in a spatial stereo field when using headphones, moving from one side to the other as they tune across the band. High Stability: All local oscillators are locked to a 1 PPM master TCXO, ensuring frequency stability across a 0–50°C temperature range. Digital Integration: Features Flash-ROM updatability via a serial port and direct PC sound card connections for digital modes like PSK31 without needing an external interface. Specifications – Frequency Range: TX/Main RX: 1.8–29.7 MHz (Amateur bands); Sub RX: 500 kHz–30 MHz – Power Output: Adjustable from 5 to 100 Watts (ALC controlled) –Modes: USB, LSB, AM, FM, CW (USB/LSB), FSK, and Panoramic Stereo –Tuning Steps: Selectable: 1, 10, 100 Hz; 1, 5, 10, 100 kHz –Selectivity: 590 built-in DSP filters (100 Hz to 6 kHz in 10 Hz steps) – Dynamic Range: 101 dB typical (IMD3) at 20-kHz and 5-kHz spacing – Antenna Impedance: 50 ohms nominal; optional internal tuner matches 6 to 800 ohms – Supply Voltage: 13.8 VDC nominal at 25 Amps maximum |
