The 8043 was introduced in November 1974 along with a partial keyer kit, the 8043-2, for $49.95. By April 1975, Curtis offered a full keyer kit based on the IC, the EK-430, for $124.95.
The 8044 is drop-in compatible with the 8043 and adds dash memory.
Retired in 1978 with the introduction of the 8044 of September that same year. MFJ may have been the first to use the new chip–in its MFJ-8044 keyer, announced in the same issue of QST.
The 8044 was released in several variations. These include:
8044M - same as 8044 but with speed meter function.
8044B - keyer-on-a-chip, type B (p/p w/8044)
8044BM - same as 8044B with speed meter fucntion
8045 - Morse keyboard on a chip
8047 - message memory on a chip
8048 - "Instructokeyer" on a chip
