See Hallicrafters' Notes: QST, Feb 1960, p. 91.
Hallicrafters' first receiver to cover only the HF ham bands, including most MARS frequencies. A dual conversion selectable sideband circuit with 1.0 µV sensitivity on all bands, and three steps of selectivity from 500 to 5000 Hz.
The SX-101 evolved a few times during production and these iterations are referred to as Mk1, Mk2, Mk3 and Mk3A. Only minor cosmetic and circuit differences between the various versions.
Crystal controlled second conversion, Tee-notch filter (with frequency and notch depth controls), gear drive tuning mechanism with 50:1 tuning ratio, vernier dial pointer adjustment, 100 kHz crystal calibrator, individually illuminated band scales, and direct-coupled series noise limter.
The oscillator section has a separate transformer that operates a heater and separate filament supply whenever the rig is plugged in. This is done to improve stability.
There are three significant difference between the SX-101 and the SX-101A. The first is the deletion of 160 and 11 meters. The second is that provisions have been added for 2 and 6 meter operation using outboard converters. The third is a change in the second IF from 50.5 to 50.75 kHz. The tube line up was also changed.
