General Notes

Note

The HWA-17-2 is designed to provide FM operation of the HW-17(A). The unit worked, but it never worked well. The adapter connects to the transceiver with two cables. Simultaneous use of the adapter an the HG-10(B) VFO is not recommended. While connected, the adapter can be switched in and out of operation, permitting rapid switching from FM to AM and back again. The unit provides switch selection of two crystal frequencies, and was supplied with a crystal for operation on 146.94 MHz (8.1633 MHz). Trimmers are provided for each crystal. See HW-17 for additional discussion. CRYSTAL FREQUENCY CALCULATION crystal frequency x 18 = operating frequency Crystal specifications: type: HC-6/U frequency range: 8000 to 8222 kHz tolerance: ±0.005% load capacity: 9 pF HWA-17-2 FM ADAPTER MODIFICATION A modification of the HW-17 is required to user the HWA-17-2 FM adapter. This modification was already installed on the HW-17A. To determine if the modification is present, remove the bottom cover of the HW-17 and refer to illustration. Look for a black wire connected between lug 2 of jack CU and the circuit board as shown. Check also for a red wire connected from lug 3 of terminal strip CM to lug 4 of socket CT, and that a red wire is NOT connected to lug 2 of capacitor AG. These changes suggest the modification has been accomplished. Band coverage: 144 to 148 MHz Output load impedance: 50kΩ or greater Output voltage: 7 volts RMS, open circuit Crystal frequency range: 8000 to 8222 kHz Crystal type: HC-6/U Deviation: adjustable from 0 to 30 kHz Power requirements (furnished by HW-17(A)): 12.6 VAC @ 300 mA; 300 VDC @ 25 mA Size: 6 long x 2.75 wide x 3.75 high (with tubes); Weight: 10 oz Tubes: (1) 12AT7, (1) 12BA7 Photos, general information and specifications from "Heathkit: A Guide to the Amateur Radio Products," by Chuck Penson, WA7ZZE.
