The EK-2 chassis/radio was included as part of the Basic Radio educational series, which was sold in two parts (A and B). The program offered a reasonably sophisticated course in radio receiver fundamentals and was intended for children and adults individually, or for use in a classroom setting.
The student is guided through the theory and construction of detectors, oscillators, power supplies and so on, using the chassis to build progressively more complex circuits. Part 1 (EK-2A) starts with a simple crystal set and ends with a regenerative receiver. Part 2 (EK-2B) ends with a two-band superheterodyne receiver. Both parts came with a spiral-bound manual that contained lesson plans and assembly instructions. These were titled Basic Radio 1 and Basic Radio 2.
The completed EK-2B covers 550 to 1600 kHz, and 3 to 10 MHz, and includes a switch to active a BFO, and another to turn the speaker on and off.
Frequency coverage and general specifications for the regenerative EK-2A are not stated.
Alignment may be done with or without instruments. Some experiments rely on a VOM like the EK-1.
The model AK-8 cabinet was optional ($3.95).
