The Drake 1-A was a landmark development in the amateur receiver field. At a time when bigger was considered better and other companies advertised receivers "built like a battleship," R.L. Drake introduced a receiver that was light and compact, but gave away nothing in performance. The 11-tube, triple-conversion 1-A covered 80-10 meters using a crystal-controlled converter and a 2900–3500 kHz tunable IF. The second and third IFs were at 1100 and 50 kHz. UC filtering and passband tuning were done at 50 kHz.
The tube count grew to 13 in later production models with the addition of a crystal calibrator and another IF tube.
