Until1 977, the R.L. Drake company had been importing its VHF FM gear. The UV-3 changed that. It was made in Drake's Ohio plant and changed some other things as well. The synthesized UV-3 was primarily a 2 meter transceiver but could also operate on both 220 and 440 MHz by adding circuit boards for each of those bands. It could be configured as a full-blown three-band rig, or only 220 or 440 could be added to the basic two meter setup. Standard repeater offsets (600 kHz, 1.6, and 5 MHz) were included. FCC Part 15 rules made it necessary for the owner to return the rig to Drake for the installation of additional bands. Output in the high-power position was 35, 15, and 8 watts on the 144, 220, and 440 MHz bands, respectively; $1130.00 (for the full 3-band package).
