General Notes

Note

The SK-102 was one of a dozen or so “SK” series products released beginning in 1986, and known collectively as the SK-100 Series Starter Kits. Many of these products were little more than toys—a fish caller, a wireless FM mic, electronic dice, and so on. And as with the SK-102, some did not have cabinets. The SK products were designed and packaged by Prokit, Heath’s partner in Hong Kong. Whether or not they can be considered true Heathkits is a matter for debate. I have taken the position that they are not, but have included the SK-102 here in the interest of completeness. The SK-102 did not replace the HD-1416, Heath’s other code practice oscillator. The two units were sold together (though not on the same page) until the very end in 1992. The SK-102 is based on the 555 timer, runs from a nine-volt battery, and has separate controls for tone and volume. The device could be keyed with an onboard pushbutton, but provided a connection for an external key (not included). Each of the SK-100 series kits included a small assembly booklet. An optional Starter Kits Educational Manual (which resembled a traditional assembly manual) was available for $10, but was included free with the purchase of at least two kits. This manual “teaches you the electronic principles used in all of the SK-100 Series Starter Kits (SK-101 through SK-111), “ with each kit discussed in a separate “session.” Photos, general information and specifications from "Heathkit: A Guide to the Amateur Radio Products," by Chuck Penson, WA7ZZE.
