The S-72 is a portable AC-DC set built into a plywood cabinet finished with brown "leatherette." The case includes a detachable lid with a handle that when attached, makes the whole thing look like a suitcase. The case includes room for headphones and storage for the 120 volt power cord when not in use.
The radio includes a 27 inch telescoping antenna and a built-in loop antenna for broadcast band reception.
A sensitivity control, when turned fully clockwise to the "ON" position activates the AVC, while simultaneously turning off the BFO. The tone control is combined with the fine tuning control.
Very early units had an ANL toggle switch at the upper right corner of the front panel. Both the switch and the ANL were subsequently deleted. Examination of advertising photos suggests the ANL switch was gone by at least June 1951. Probably earlier.
The battery (RCA VS018, Burgess G6M60, et al) provides 7.5 volts at 100 mA. and 90 volts at 30 mA. Note that these battery types are long obsolete. Automatic power changeover disconnects the battery when the set is plugged into 120 volts AC or DC.
AM and CW reception over the entire range, with FM added above 27 MHz.
S-72L is a long wave version.
