This is a TVI-proofed version of the TR-1, though it bears no resemblance whatsoever to the TR-1. The unit is built on three separate rack-mount chassis–the exciter-final, the modulator, and the power supply, but only the exciter-final component was shown in advertising until QST, September 1953. And to add a little bit of confusion about what the TR-1TV actually looked like, a slightly different version was shown in the original ad in QST, September 1952.
All three units could be purchased separately, or as a bundle. When purchased as a bundle,
they come in a standard 19" cabinet 28" high. Each unit is supplied complete with a standard 19" panel finished in silk screened grey hammertone, punched chassis, tubes, hardware, components and instruction manual.
EXCITER/FINAL
Covers 80, 40, 20, 15, 11 and 10 meter bands and is bandswitching in all stages including the final stage, with all controls on front panel. Broadband slug tuned exciter stages. TVI is minimized through the use of a special shielded cabinet, proper by-passing of circuits, filtered leads, shielded meters, a built-in AC line filter and a low pass transmission line filter. Uses a 6AG7 oscillator, 6V6 and 6AG7 multipliers, a 6AU5GT clamp tube and a 4E27A/5-125B final. Includes a switch for selecting one of 8 crystals or a VFO. Pi-network output, 52/72 ohm impedance. Less crystals and VFO.
The manual lists a slightly different tube line-up: (3) 6CL6, (1) (6AU5), (1) 4E27A or 5-125B
MODULATOR
High impedance input for crystal or dynamic mike. Uses 12AT7 and 6AQ5 speech amplifiers and a pair of 811's in class B. A 300 mA meter mounted in panel reads modulator plate current. Less microphone.
POWER SUPPLY
Consists of two complete power supplies. One supplies high voltage to the final and/or modulator. A tapped secondary provides a range of 200 to 300 watts input, and uses a pair of 866A's. The other power supply uses a 5U4G rectifier and delivers 400 VDC to RF multipliers, 340 volts to the RF oscillator and speech amplifiers as well as bias for the 811 modulators. For 110 VAC, 50/60 cycle operation.
