The Hallicrafters Sky-Rider S-1 was the first receiver in the famous Skyrider series. Designed by Bill Halligan and manufactured by the Silver-Marshall Manufacturing Company of Chicago, it offered an affordable, complete shortwave setup during the Great Depression.
The S-1 tuned from 1500 kHz to 25 MHz covered across four front-panel switched bands. It did not include the standard broadcast (BC) band.
The basic model sold for $39.95. An amateur version ($49.50) added a centered, electrical band-spread dial to the front panel for finer amateur radio band tuning. Slightly higher-priced battery-operated configurations were available for both the basic and amateur setups.
Features an internal power pack and a panel-mounted speaker, removing the need for external accessories other than optional headphones. The design uniquely lacks audio interstage transformers.
A distinctive riveted panel plate that uniquely combines the "hallicrafters" (lowercase) and "Silver-Marshall" company names, alongside the slogan "handcraft makes perfect". Note that the model number and Skyrider name do not appear on the front panel.
