With the SX-88, Hallicrafters set out to design the "finest amateur receiver in the world." The 20-tube set covered 0.535 to 33 MHz in six bands, with precision gear-driven tuning. Band spread calibrated for 160, 80, 40, 20, 15, 11, and 10 meters. Includes a 100 kHz crystal calibrator. It was double conversion with IFs at 2075 and 50 kHz except for band two, which used 1550 and 50 kHz. L/C circuits at 50 kHz offered six steps of selectivity from 250 Hz to 10 kHz. Other features include two position BFO (one provide increased output for SSB reception), antenna trimmer, delayed action AVC, S-meter, and an IF output jack. The SX-88 had a phono input jack and 10 watts of audio from a pair of P-P 6V6s.
Hallicrafters' top-of-the-line receiver, worth more than $6700 in 2023, adjusted for inflation.
