General Notes

Note

he Icom IC-228(A)(H) is compact 144MHz FM transceivers designed for ease of operation. These units utilize advanced technology to provide high output power in a small form factor, making them suitable for mobile installations where space may be limited. The IC-228 series was manufactured between 1988 and 1990. It was introduced to replace the IC-28 series (IC-28A/H), which had been Icom's primary 2-meter mobile offering in the mid-1980s. At the time of its release, the IC-228 was marketed for its significantly reduced size compared to earlier models. It was part of an industry-wide trend toward miniaturization, making it easier to install in the increasingly cramped dashboards of late-80s vehicles. The IC-228 series was succeeded by the IC-229 series (IC-229A/E/H) in 1990. The IC-229 looked very similar but added more memory channels and improved wide-band receive capabilities. Key Features – High Output Power: Provides up to 45W of output power on the 2m band for the IC-228H model. – Simple Panel Design: Features a straightforward front panel layout for easy access to functions. – Memory: Equipped with 20 memory channels and one call channel. Each memory channel can independently store an operating frequency and necessary repeater information. – Scanning: Includes both Programmed Scan and Memory Scan modes. A Memory Skip function allows users to bypass unnecessary channels during a scan. – Priority Watch: Automatically monitors a specific memory or call channel every five seconds while operating in VFO mode. – Pocket Beep Function: When an optional UT-40 Tone Squelch Unit is installed, this function alerts the user with a 30-second beep and a flashing "SQL" indicator when a call with matching subaudible tones is received. – Monitor Function: Allows the user to open the squelch to listen for weak signals without manually adjusting the squelch threshold. – SET Mode: A convenient programming mode used to configure tones, offsets, tuning steps, and scan edges. Specifications – Frequency Range: 144MHz band (2m). – Mode: FM. – Output Power: IC-228H: High 45W / Low 5W. IC-228A/E: High 25W / Low 5W. – Antenna Impedance: 50Ω (uses PL-259 connector). – Microphone Impedance: 600Ω. Power Requirement: 13.8V DC (±15% negative ground). Current Drain: IC-228H: 10A. IC-228A/E: 7A. Operating Temperature Range: −10∘C to +60∘C (+14∘F to +140∘F).
