Note
he JRC NRD-535 is a professional-grade HF communications receiver designed with advanced technology derived from Japan Radio Co., Ltd.'s extensive experience in maritime and coastal station radio equipment. The receiver is built with a complete modular plug-in design with extensive use of surface-mount components to ensure uniform quality and high reliability. It was sold in two versions: the 535 (standard) and the 535D (deluxe).
The differnece between the 535 and 535D came down to three options:
– CFL-243W Bandwidth Control (BWC) Unit: Allowed for continuously variable IF bandwidth.
– CMF-78 Exalted Carrier Selectable Sideband (ECSS) Unit: Provided a synchronous detector to improve AM reception and reduce fading.
– CFL-233 1.0 kHz Narrow Crystal Filter: Essential for RTTY and narrow CW reception.
By the end of its production run in 1998, many retailers sold the "D" model almost exclusively in the North American market, as it was considered the definitive version of the receiver for serious DXers.
Features
High-Performance Tuning:
– Variable Tuning System: Employs electronic tuning by capacitor diodes in the front end, continuously controlled by a microprocessor to enhance signal selectivity and attenuate undesired signals.
– High-Speed Synthesizer: Features a one-chip Direct Digital Synthesizer (DDS) IC for high purity local signals and high-speed frequency switching.
– Magnetic Rotary Encoder: A high-precision main dial allows for 1-Hz step tuning, providing the feel of an analog VFO.
Interference Rejection:
– Exalted Carrier Selectable Sideband (ECSS) - Option: Reduces distortion from fading and allows for the selection of the sideband least affected by adjacent station interference.
– Bandwidth Control (BWC) - Option: Allows the IF filter pass bandwidth to be narrowed continuously from 2.4 kHz to approximately 500 Hz.
– Pass-Band Shift (PBS): Shifts the equivalent center frequency of the IF filter up or down to expel undesired signals from the band.
– Notch Filter: A sharp notch in the IF circuit eliminates beat interference close to the desired signal.
– Noise Blanker (NB): Effectively eliminates wide-range noises, from automobile ignition to "woodpecker" noise.
Advanced Operations:
– All-Mode Support: Reception for RTTY, CW, USB, LSB, AM, FM, and FSK modes.
– 200-Channel Memory: Stores frequency, mode, AGC time, ATT status, and IF bandwidth in C-MOS RAM with lithium battery backup.
– Multi-Function Display: Large custom vacuum fluorescent display shows frequency, memory channel, mode, bandwidth, and a digital signal strength bar graph.
– Computer Control: An RS-232C interface (option) allows for the remote control of 28 operational functions.
– Scanning and Sweeping: Features user-defined scan and sweep rates with automatic stop when the squelch opens.
