General Notes

Note

The Kenwood TR-7950 and TR-7930 are 2-meter FM transceivers designed for both mobile and fixed-station use. While they share most features and physical dimensions, the primary difference lies in their power output: the TR-7950 delivers a hefty 45 watts, while the TR-7930 provides a modest 25 watts. The units were widely considered "workhorse" radios for their time, known for being built like tanks and offering a high-power mobile option that was relatively uncommon for the era. They remained in production until 1985, when they were succeeded by the TM-series transceivers Features – Display & Indicators: Features a large, backlit LCD digital display that is easy to read in direct sunlight or darkness. It displays transmit/receive frequencies, memory channels, repeater offsets (+, S, -), and sub-tone data. – Memory System: Equipped with 21 multi-function memory channels. Memories 1–15: Store simplex or ±600 kHz offset frequencies. Memories 16/17 and 18/19: Paired for non-standard ("odd-split") repeater offsets. Memories A and B: Set the upper and lower limits for programmable band scanning. – Scanning Options: Supports programmable memory scan, band scan, and priority alert. – Scan Resume: Selectable between automatic time-operated (approx. 5 seconds) or carrier-operated resume. – Memory Lock-out: An "L0" key allows the user to skip selected memory channels during a scan without erasing them. Center Stop: Automatically stops on the channel center during a band scan, accompanied by a "Center Tuning" indicator. – Power: Both models include a HI/LOW power switch to reduce output to approximately 5 watts for local communication. – Autopatch: Includes a built-in 16-key DTMF autopatch pad. – Memory Back-up: A built-in lithium battery maintains memory data even when the unit is disconnected from power, with an estimated life of five years. – Automatic Offset: Pre-programmed for standard ±600 kHz offsets according to the ARRL 2-meter band plan. – Extended Coverage: Covers 142.000 to 148.995 MHz in 5-kHz steps. Technical Specifications – Frequency Range: 144.000 to 147.995 MHz – RF Output Power (High/Low) TR-7930: 25/ 5 watts adjustable TR-7950: 45 / 5 watts adjustable – Mode: FM – Spurious Radiation: Less than -70 dB. – Receiver Circuitry: Double Superheterodyne – Intermediate Freq. 1st: 10.695 MHz; 2nd: 455 kHz 1st: 10.695 MHz; 2nd: 455 kHz – Sensitivity: Better than 12 dB for 0.25 µV SINAD – Audio Output: > 2.0 Watts across 8 ohms – Antenna Impedance: 50 ohms – Operating Temperature: −20∘C to +50∘C. – Microphone: Dynamic microphone with PTT switch, 500 Ω.
