The Kenwood TS-2000 is a versatile, all-mode multiband transceiver, sometimes referred to as a "shack-in-a-box" due to its extensive frequency coverage and feature set within a single unit. It was designed to provide a comprehensive solution for HF, VHF, and UHF operations, making it popular for base station, mobile, and satellite use.
The TS-2000 had an exceptionally long production run of approximately 18 years. Kenwood officially discontinued the series in late 2018, with retailers clearing out the final "factory fresh" stock through early 2019.
Frequency Coverage and Power
The TS-2000 provides comprehensive coverage across the following amateur bands:
– HF/50 MHz: 100 watts output.
– 144 MHz (2m): 100 watts output.
– 430/440 MHz (70cm): 50 watts output.
– 1.2 GHz (23cm): 10 watts output (standard on the TS-2000X model or available as an optional UT-20 module).
Key Technical Features
– Dual Receivers: The radio features a main receiver and a sub-receiver. The main receiver covers all supported bands and modes, while the sub-receiver is typically used for FM or AM reception on the VHF/UHF bands, allowing for simultaneous monitoring.
– IF Digital Signal Processing (DSP): It was one of the earlier transceivers to implement DSP at the Intermediate Frequency (IF) stage for the main receiver. This allows for adjustable filter slopes, noise reduction, and an auto-notch filter.
– Satellite Operation: The TS-2000 is highly regarded for satellite work. It supports full-duplex operation, Doppler frequency tracking, and has 10 dedicated satellite memory channels.
– Built-in TNC: It includes a built-in 1200/9600 bps Terminal Node Controller (TNC) for packet radio and DX Cluster monitoring.
– Antenna Management: The unit features a built-in automatic antenna tuner for HF and 6-meter bands, along with multiple antenna ports for the various frequency ranges.
Variants
– TS-2000: The standard model.
– TS-2000X: The same as the standard model but with the 1.2 GHz module factory-installed.
– TS-B2000: A "silver box" version designed for remote control via a PC or the optional RC-2000 mobile head, lacking a traditional front-panel display and controls.
