Note
The Logikey K-3 is the successor to the K-1, representing a significant evolution in Idiom Press's lineup. While it retains the core "Super Keyer" CMOS logic and the paddle-entry command system, the K-3 was specifically designed to handle the more demanding requirements of modern amateur radio contesting and complex station integration.
If the K-1 was the "minimalist workhorse," the K-3 is the "advanced controller."
Key Features of the Logikey K-3
The K-3 maintained the same rugged, black metal aesthetic but expanded the internal capabilities significantly. It introduced more sophisticated memory management and enhanced the ability to interface with external equipment.
– Expanded Memory: The K-3 increased the number of message buffers to six (compared to the K-1's four). These are non-volatile, meaning they survive power loss without a backup battery.
– Enhanced Contest Functionality: It introduced more robust automated serial numbering, including the ability to decrement numbers (for correcting errors during a run) and "leading zero" suppression or insertion.
– User Profiles: The K-3 allowed for multiple "user" configurations, which was a boon for multi-operator contest stations where different hams preferred different speeds, weights, or keying modes.
– Push-to-Talk (PTT) Loop: One of the most critical additions was a dedicated PTT line with programmable delay. This ensures the amplifier or rig is fully switched before the first RF pulse is sent, preventing "hot switching."
After power is applied, the keyer responds with "OK" and is ready for operation. It is initialized as follows:
– Speed range: 5-40 WPM
– Load mode: character
– Weight: 50%
– Input queue: on
– Monitor: On
– Serial number: 001
– Auto-space: Off
– Emulation: Logikey K1, K3
– Function speed: Equals Paddle speed
– Monitor Tone: 700 Hertz
Note: At start-up the first time, the speed control knob should be turned fully clockwise and a few dots sent, then turned fully counterclockwise and a few more dots sent. This allows the keyer to calibrate the speed range.
