The Squires-Sanders SS-IBS is a international broadcast receiver. An unusual feature is motor-assisted tuning with two buttons under the main knob. The SS-IBS was a highly advanced receiver for its time, and was designed for commercial and broadcast applications.
Features
– Front-End & Mixing: Uses 7360 beam-deflection tubes for the 1st and 2nd mixers to provide exceptional freedom from cross-modulation and overload while maintaining a high signal-to-noise ratio.
– Double Conversion Scheme: Employs a fixed 5.0–5.5 MHz first IF bandpass (except on the 7.0–7.5 MHz band, which uses single conversion) and a 1 MHz second IF.
– Frequency Tuning & Readout: Combines a 12-position 360 degrees continuous bandswitch drum dial for 500 kHz band segments with a digital readout (counters indicating 0 to 99 kHz directly) alongside a slide-rule dial.
– Frequency accuracy of 1 kHz is achieved with an odometer-type two digit display used in conjunction with the analog dial.
– Overload & Interference Resistance: Built to extract weak signals located only a few kilocycles away from powerful broadcast stations, featuring high immunity to cross-modulation and front-end overload.
– Tuning & Readout: Includes a digital readout displaying frequency directly in kilocycles, alongside a tuning mechanism equipped with a motor drive for rapid band traverse.
– Selectivity Options: Features sharp crystal lattice filtering with selectable bandwidths of 8.0 kHz, 5.0 kHz, and 2.5 kHz.
– Operating Modes: Supports AM, USB, LSB, and CW, with built-in provisions for exalted carrier reception.
– Outputs: Equipped with connections for monitoring via headphones/external speaker, recording, direct rebroadcasting, and visual band analysis.
– Motor-Driven Tuning: Equipped with a fast-traverse, push-button motor drive for rapid band sweeps that automatically disengages via a clutch for manual tuning
– Optional SS-IS noise blanker
– Optional SS-IV panoramic display
Specifications
– Frequency coverage (MHz) is:
3.5-4.0
5.9-6.4
7.0-7.5
9.5-10
11.5-12.0
15.0-15.5
17.5-18.0
21.4-21.9
25.6-26.1
– Additional coverage is provided for WWW (5.0-5.5) and at 10 MHz.
– Selectivity: Offers three selectable IF bandwidths (8.0 kHz, 5.0 kHz, and 2.5 kHz). The 2.5 kHz position uses a high-Q bandpass crystal filter with a 60/6 dB shape factor of only 2:1 for SSB/exalted-carrier AM reception.
– Sensitivity: < 0.5 uV for 10 dB S+N/N in 2.5 kHz bandwidth (< 1.0 uV on 7.0–7.5 MHz band)
– Frequency Accuracy & Stability ±1 kHz max error; < 500 Hz cold drift (warm-up < 5 min), < 100 Hz/hr afterwards
– AGC Settings: Fast attack (1 ms); Fast release (0.1 s); Slow release (1.0 s)
