The KR5 single-paddle electronic keyer had a fixed weighting ratio and a speed range of 6–50 wpm. A thumbscrew on the paddle adjusted its travel. The keyer operated from either 6 or 12 VDC and had reed-relay keying output. The KR-5A single-lever keyer was essentially the same as the earlier KR-5. Its cabinet and color scheme had been given an updated look, and a manual key/tune-up button was located on the cabinet top. The paddle mechanism was available separately (in the same box) as the KR2.
