Synthesizers such as Vanguard's STR brought frequency agility to crystal-controlled gear. The STR was designed to work with transceivers using 5 to 85 MHz crystals to operate in the 20 to 475 MHz range. Thumbwheel switches provided tuning in 1 kHz increments from 5-30 MHz and 5 kHz steps above 30 MHz. Standard transmit offsets of ±600 kHz and ± 1 MHz were included along with provision for 2 user-specified offsets. The STR for 5-150 MHz sold for $259.95 while the 151-475 MHz unit was $279.95. Transceivers requiring only one crystal could use Vanguard's less expensive Model SR synthesizer.
