Note
The Yaesu FT-991A is a highly versatile, compact transceiver that covers HF, 50 MHz, 144 MHz, and 430 MHz bands. It serves as an all-in-one station rig while remaining portable enough for mobile or field deployment.
The "A" version (released late 2016) included a critical upgrade over the original FT-991 model.
Specifically, the Real-Time Sweep on the original FT-991 couldn't handle audio reception and spectrum sweeping simultaneously. When the radio swept the band to update the scope, it had to momentarily mute the receiver audio. The "A" version added a dedicated scope unit (SCP-Unit) and a modified main board, giving it a true real-time, non-muting spectrum scope.
The Multi-Color Waterfall: The older model featured a very rudimentary, single-color bar-graph style scope. The "A" update introduced the chronological, multi-color waterfall to track signal history over time.
Yaesu offered an official hardware upgrade program for a while, where owners of the original FT-991 could ship their rigs to a service center to have the main and control boards swapped out for the "A" versions to gain that live waterfall and continuous audio.
Features
– Wide-Band Coverage & Modes: This all-mode transceiver covers all amateur bands from 160 meters to 70 centimeters, supporting SSB, CW, AM, FM, and C4FM digital modes.
– High-Resolution Display: It features a 3.5-inch full-color TFT touch panel that provides a real-time spectrum scope and a multi-color waterfall display for instantly evaluating band conditions and finding signals.
– Sophisticated Receiver Design: The receiver utilizes triple-conversion circuitry (with a 69.450 MHz 1st IF) and incorporates roofing filters (3 kHz and 15 kHz) to ensure excellent adjacent signal characteristics.
– Advanced DSP Interference Rejection: The radio employs a high-speed floating-point DSP (TMS320C6746) to provide interference rejection functions such as CONTOUR, NOTCH, and a 16-stage digital noise reduction (DNR).
– Robust Power Output: The final amplifier stage delivers 100 watts of output for HF/50 MHz bands and 50 watts for VHF/UHF bands.
– Built-in Antenna Tuner: A high-speed automatic antenna tuner is included as standard equipment for the 1.8 to 54 MHz range, featuring a 100-channel memory for quick recall of tuning settings.
– C4FM Digital Capability: The transceiver supports advanced C4FM digital functions, including the AMS (Automatic Mode Select) function, which recognizes digital or FM modes, and GM (Group Monitor) for seeing group members on-screen.
– Versatile Connectivity: A built-in USB port allows for single-cable connection to a PC for CAT control, audio input/output, and PTT/RTTY control.
