General Notes

Note

The SCU-17 is a versatile USB interface unit designed to connect a Yaesu transceiver to a personal computer. It facilitates CAT (Computer Aided Transceiver) control and enables various digital communication modes such as SSTV, RTTY, and PSK. The unit acts as a bridge, especially for computers that lack an RS-232C connection, by providing CAT communication through a standard USB terminal. The Yaesu SCU-17 USB Interface Unit is specifically designed for use with several Yaesu transceivers. According to the instruction manual, it can be used with the following models: – FTDX series: FTDX1200 , FTDX9000 Series , and FTDX5000 Series. – FT series: FT-450D , FT-817ND , FT-857D , FT-897D , FT-950 , and the FT-2000 Series. While the unit is compatible with these models, some require specific optional cables for full functionality: – FT-2000 and FTDX5000 Series: Requires the optional SCU-21 connection cable or the CT-39/A packet interface cable. – FTDX9000 Series: Requires the optional SCU-22 connection cable or the CT-39/A packet interface cable. – FT-817ND, FT-857D, and FT-897D: Requires the optional CT-62 CAT interface cable. The SCU-17 can be interfaced with other transceivers using the supplied 3.5 mm stereo plugs. Features – Single-Cable Connectivity: Equipped with a built-in USB audio system device, TX and RX audio signals are transmitted via the USB cable, meaning only the supplied USB cable is needed for the primary connection between the SCU-17 and a PC. – Dual-Channel USB Serial Device: This allows for CAT communication and various transmission modes to operate simultaneously. – USB Bus Powered: The unit draws its power directly from the computer's USB bus, eliminating the need for an external power supply. – RF Isolation: Uses photo relays for the PTT (Push-to-Talk) and FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) terminals. – Ground Isolation: Incorporates AF transformers in the Audio IN/OUT lines to ensure excellent ground isolation and prevent interference. – Customizable Settings: Internal switches and jumpers allow users to change PTT/FSK control settings or enable an audio output attenuator. Specifications – Interface Connectors: USB: USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 (Bus power). CAT/RS-232C: 9-pin DB-9 jack (RS-232C voltage level). DATA Jack (6-pin MDIN6P): PTT/FSK Output: Max +25 V, 50 mA (Open collector). DATA-IN/OUT**: 100 mVrms @ 10 kΩ / 600 Ω. PTT/FSK Jack (3.5 mm Stereo)**: – Output: Max +30 V, 250 mA (Open drain). – Audio Jack (3.5 mm Stereo): IN/OUT: 100 mVrms @ 600 Ω. Supply Voltage: DC 5.0 V ±5%, Negative Ground. Current Consumption: Approximately 130 mA.
