Paul David, RCAF, bomb aimer, 97 Squadron. Memorial cross and original box (4 images).Context
The Memorial Cross (often called the Silver Cross) was awarded to mothers and widows (next of kin) of Canadian military personnel who died on active duty or whose death was subsequently attributed to such duty. The crosses were sent automatically to those who qualified, and could be worn at any time.
The cross is engraved with Paul David's name, his rank, service number, and role as a navigator (it was necessary to train as a navigator before specialising as a bomb aimer).
The original exterior cardboard box with message ("in memory of someone dear who died for his country") and the leather-bound presentation box are both present.
