Hugh Ashton, gunner, 83 Squadron - one of three press clippings from the Essex Chronicle.Context
This is an interesting article about Ashton and his experiences in the war, and also about the Wings for Victory Campaign in 1943 when Chelmsford raised an immense amount of money, enough to fund 12 Lancasters, a flight of fighters, and 'a supply of bombs'. Ashton, as an honoured son of Chelmsford, was chosen to present the plaque of gratitude from the Air Ministry.
FOOTNOTE
The tragic story to the left of the column concerns Keith J Shipp, 431 Squadron, who was lost with his entire crew, that of Flying Officer G O Carefoot, RCAF, on the night of 18/19 November 1943. Their Halifax aircraft is thought to have been ditched close to the English coast after suffering severe battle damage. Two months later Shipp's body washed up at Bexhill-on-Sea.Collection
