Description

Clayton Descou Clement Boyce, SASO, Pathfinder Headquarters.

Context

Clayton Descou Clement Boyce, SASO, Pathfinder Headquarters. The image shows one of three Boyce Flying Log Books in the Archive. Boyce, who was born in 1907, joined the RAF at the age of 18 and had a very long and illustrious career in the Service. His two logbooks cover the full run of his RAF career, including his spell as SASO (Senior Air Staff Officer) of the Pathfinders from February 1943 to November 1945. He was AOC Bennett's second in command and they did not always see eye to eye. The third logbook is that of Sam Boyce, Clayton's son. It is not an official logbook but is filled with the (non-operational) flights which his father took him on as a teenager, against regulations. It ends with Sam's first proper flight as a pilot in his own right. A charming piece of Boyce family history. Donated by the Boyce family in memory of Sam Boyce, 2021.
