Albert Charles East, letter to his fiance Pat, 28 May 1945.Context
When a Prisoner of War, Albert suffered a serious injury to his hand which resulted in blood poisoning and serious illness. He was evacuated to Rheims in France by the American Red Cross and thereafter flown to England. He disguises the seriousness of his condition in his letter, saying he has a slightly sprained thumb.
