Description

Cufflinks showing Lancasters in flight.

Context

The Lancasters have the 'OL' code for 83 Squadron on their side and the aircraft letter 'Y' for Y-York. It is not known why these cufflinks were in the estate of Wing Commander Peter McDermott when he died many years after the war. He had not been a Lancaster pilot but had flown Mosquitoes in 608 and 162 Squadrons. However, in 1944 he did spend a short time at RAF Station Wyton at which 83 Squadron were based before their transfer to 5 Group in April 1944. Alternatively, he may have picked them up post-war in a flea-market as he was fond of collecting. Donated by Wing Commander P A C McDermott, DFC, DFM.
