Description

Members of the Hatcher Crew, 83 Squadron at 5 Group.

Context

Members of the Hatcher crew. On 22 December 1944 the crew involved in a fatal aircraft crash were : S/Ldr Leslie Hatcher DFC, AFM, pilot F/Sgt Henry Naldrett, flight engineer F/Lt Alan John Booker DFC, navigator P/O Edward Marron, bomb aimer W/O Robert Frederick Goodman, bomb aimer F/Lt Charles Summerscales, DFC, wireless operator W/O Frederick James Bell, gunner F/Lt Mervyn Ingmire, gunner Mervyn Ingmire was the only survivor. Ernest Naldrett notes of the photograph that it was taken at a visit to Skegness a few months before his brother Henry lost his life. Two crewmembers are wearing PFF badges, which as they started at 15 Squadron in May 1944 are likely to date from around July 1944. Ernest Naldrett identifies the crewmembers as, L-R, Bob Goodman (bomb aimer), Henry, and Mervyn Ingmire, the rear gunner and only survivor of the crash. However, a more likely identity for the man on the left is F/Lt Alan John Booker, navigator, wearing his "O" for Observer badge. It is also probable that the man on the right is F/Lt Charles Summerscales, DFC, the wireless operator, whose Signals badge (worn on the right sleeve) cannot be seen; he is the only one with medal ribbons. Donated by Owen White and Catlin LLP Solicitors on behalf of the Naldrett family.
