Description

Albert Charles East, letter to his fiance Pat, 13 January 1944. (6 pages)

Context

This six-page letter, written from the Sergeants Mess at RAF Bourn, was the last one which Albert wrote before being shot down over the Dutch island of Texel the following night. There is a lot of interesting detail about the gunner, Jack Skinner, who would lose his life in the shooting-down. There is also a mention of the replacement gunner for Ken Newman, who was in hospital. The replacement was Leslie Laver, formerly of the Thackway crew, who like Jack would lose his life the following night. Donated by Joan Champion and Paul East, April 2021.
