Description

Ernest Alfred Deverill, pilot, 97 Squadron. With his father.

Context

Ernest Arthur Deverill had a long naval career which lasted from the First World War to late in the Second World War. From 1940, he was at the torpedo base at Dover, and the family home became "Harpeden", Whitfield, north-west of Dover, where this photograph was taken. Their father's career evidently had a great influence upon his children. Ernest joined Coastal Command in June 1939 (206 Squadron, 16 Group, based at Bircham Newton in Norfolk), but he would transfer to Bomber Command in 1941.His younger brother David joined the Royal Navy before the Second World War. Their only sister, Doreen, joined the Wrens, the Women's Royal Naval Service.
