James Kirkwood is the tall man, centre of back row. On 1 September 1939 he joined the City of Glasgow Squadron, RAFVR, and this photograph was taken after his particular group of volunteers moved to England for training. The photograph was almost certainly taken at No. 8 ITW, Hastings. to which James was transferred on 28 April 1940. None of the group in the picture have as yet won their wings; they have, however, had time to acquire a pet dog (with the man with crossed legs in the front row). James won his wings in 1942.
