1958 was the first year the Ford Thunderbird was available as a four-seat car. It is longer and heavier than its 1957 predecessor, and was nicknamed the "Square Bird". Some standard features of these cars were a 352 cubic inch V8 engine that produced 300 hp, four-wheel drum brakes, quad head and tail lights, and a wheelbase of 113". Additionally, they had a three-speed manual transmission and the option of a three-speed automatic transmission.
Customers were able to choose between a hardtop or convertible. The original prices for the car were $3,700 for the hardtop and $3,980 for the convertible. Ford sold 37,892 Thunderbirds in 1958, which was the best sales year for the model at the time. Like its predecessor, this car came in multiple color options.
