Typed personal recollection titled “My Recollection of Miss Lillian Rice” written by Edward Spurr describing childhood memories of architect Lilian Rice in Rancho Santa Fe during the 1930s. The author recounts visiting Rice’s architectural office located on Paseo Delicias near Nelson’s Realty where she provided him with a drafting table and drawing tools while he was a young boy. The narrative also recalls assisting a building inspector during construction of the Rancho Santa Fe grammar school in 1937, where Spurr was hired by Rice to help inspect the crawl space beneath the building. The account further describes the author’s later realization that a photograph found among his mother’s papers likely depicted Lilian Rice rather than another individual and suggests the photograph might be of interest to the Rancho Santa Fe Historical Society.
