Terracotta, Terracotta VotivesDescription
This small terracotta object is a molded anatomical votive representing a human eye or eye socket (palpebral region). It features a smooth, almond-shaped or lenticular outline with a convex outer surface that gently swells toward the center, tapering along the outer edges to imitate the eyelids and ocular contours.
Composed of a dark brownish-red to charcoal-toned earthenware clay matrix, the object shows a slightly rough, granular surface texture. Dedicated at ancient sanctuaries (particularly in Greco-Roman or Etruscan healing cults), such anatomical votives were offered to deities like Asclepius or Salus either in supplication for healing an affliction of the eye or as a gift of thanksgiving (eucharisterion) following recovery.Collection
